you can sand and stain it, you could paint it with chalk or milk paint, you could distress it -

If the top is in good condition (and if it's wood), you can re-stain on top of the old stain - of course, you can only go darker. I just did it with my dining room table and was thrilled with the results. I used General Finishes gel stain. -
