Joan,. The best product is Saddle Soap, it's just for leather. You can purchase this at an automotive store, or auto section in a department store. Call first, and see who has it. There are directions on the can or bottle. Once you buff it up, try making or buying a head rest of material, so that it hangs way past the headrest. Cover the arms of the sofa also. Make them big enough, so they don't slide off easy. Aloha!
Clean it with a good leather cleaner and follow that up with a good leather conditioner. That will help clean and rehydrate the leather and may help with some of the staining, but some may be permanent. You could make something to drape over where his head rests to prevent more staining on the hardest, same for the arms of the sofa, make arm covers. You will need to occasionally clean and condition the leather to keep it supple so that it will not continue to crack.
