I used Polyurethane the clear gloss but you can also get it in semi. Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware -

depends on what the surface is to begin with ; if wood, epoxy resin - like they use on bars -- drys clear as glass -- shiny, and easy to clean -

I’m not sure what you’re trying to accomplish are you trying to protect your table from children crafting or for mealtime an elegant dinner?Would a plastic vinyl tablecloth be an option?Or you can buy the thick clear vinyl on the roll —by the yard (some Walmarts and fabric stores )and put a cloth tablecloth over that. -

Have a piece of thick glass cut to fit. That way, you can always remove it and you're not permanently changing the table top. -
