Repaint, add crown molding and if you have ceiling fixtures how about adding medallions? If the style suits your home you can add beams. Either real or faux boxes to appear beefier than they really are.
I saw Styrofoam squares about 1/2 ' and about 20' square I think with a design to glue over existing ceiling. But they were sold out. You could buy the sheets and cut them yourself.
