It all depends on what you need to patch. If there is a hole in the siding, take another piece, cut it square and glue it on with a good vinyl glue. Do this when it warms up. I had to do this when a neighbour shot a rock with the lawn mower into my vinyl siding and it does not even show if you match the pattern as best you can.
Vinyl siding with no maintenance can last 20 to 40 years. Maintained can last 60 years. Now some manufacturers are even offering lifetime warranty that is transferable.

Is it cracking? Vinyl siding only last about 15 years before it gets brittle and needs replacing.
