Wood on pool deck keeps rotting out. What am I doing wrong?

Question

Built a pool deck using treated lumber. Top surface is 5/4 x 6 boards. Have had to replace rotted boards three times in 6 years. Treated with Thomson water seal. What am I doing wrong?

I have a redwood deck around my pool that has been there for 19 years. I have finished it maybe four times in that time using a product called Penefin. It is a penetrating oil, easy to apply, but it is fantastic and very durable. Lots of great colors too so you can get the look you llike.

Check at your local home improvement store to see if they have something that would be more resistant to the pool chemicals. That is probably what is eating away at the Thompsons' and causes it to fail and then affect the treated wood.

Hello there, Maybe it is time to replace at least the rotting boards with Composite boards instead........Unless you want to keep replacing them.....?.

I am not at all impressed with Thomson's Water Seal. After 2 years Thompson's only rated 6 out of 10 according to this site: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/thompsons-waterseal-finish-review/ It did not even repel water after 2 years. The oils in Thompson's promote mold and algae growth. And chlorine in any form is hard on wood.

I would remove any remnants of the Thompsons and use another type of finish. The site, Deck Stain Help rated TWP (Total Wood Preservative) brand as a top performer. Visit the TWP site for more info: https://www.twpstain.com/
