House built in the early 70s. Of course, all ceilings are covered with that ugly popcorn coating! Working on the half bath and decided that I have had it with that ceiling. Got all the popcorn off yesterday so apparently not painted; but of course, I now have holes since it wasn't primed either! Tried patching with some drywall compound but think I need to prime it all before I go any further. Thank you for the comments on this.

Bonnie, you will need to sand the drywall compound to a very smooth finish first, and then prime. Since I wanted my ceilings white, I just used latex Kilz and rolled it on. If you want to use paint, get the kind that contains primer to save yourself some work. I found that the seams of the drywall were not finished properly when the ceilings were installed. The lazy installers just sprayed over their poor workmanship!!

I have now removed popcorn ceilings in over half of my ceilings. After unsuccessfully sanding and patching which still didn't look right, I just installed beadboard planking on top. So much easier and looks pretty good too.

This is the beadboard from Lowes. Great overlap and very thin. Have to apply glue and brad nail to the studs. Because they are only 4 feet long, I am able to do it myself.
