Patching, Resurfacing, Painting Entryway and Steps

A lot of members complain they would like to see a photo of the finished project first, so I'm posting the final job.

This is the landing and steps after removing the indoor and outdoor carpeting. Lot of chips, flaking, and spalling. I have poured a lot of concrete slabs and steps but never had resurfaced existing concrete. This is a first and it's a little different.

This is what it looks like after a good cleaning. Since this is the main entrance the railing lifts off some pipes mounted to the side. This allows for moving furniture in and out. Genius idea. The landing and steps are ready for patching.

I used Quickcrete fast dry patching compound, Akona concrete resurfacer, and Quickcrete concrete adhesive. Both products are polymer fortified and say no adhesive needed but I did for extra bonding. Just playing it safe and recommend using it. Worth the $9.

After doing quite a bit of research. For the paint I used Dutch Boy porch and floor in battleship grey. Paint and primer all in one. Other products need separate primer.

Here it is with the patching. Quickcrete patching compound dries fast. Always add the powder to the water. Also use as little water to start with. You can always add more water. Too much water and you'll end up using more powder than you need. I started with about half a cup of water. Mixed it to a peanut butter consistency. It's made to be applied 1/2"+ thick. Once it's in a "plastic" stage you can form and carve it to shape.

Here is the first coat of resurfacer on the landing. Steps will be next. It can be applied from 1/4" to feather edge. I needed 1/2" so I needed to do two pours. Same as the patch use very little water and powder goes in the water. It's somewhat self leveling but should be spread with a squeegee. I did a consistency of sour creme. The 2X4's and plywood are there so we could get in and out of the house. Takes about four hours to harden but waited overnight.

Here is the landing and steps all done and ready for paint. I gave them a broom finish for traction. This stuff is harder than the existing concrete. Looking good.

Here it is all painted. Took two coats of paint (recommended). Painted the railing with Rustoleum black gloss paint.
