I put wallpaper boarder on the risers. Looks great. -

If they are basement stairs a fun way to do it is a kind of rainbow effect using the small sampler paints from Home Depot. That way you can choose any colour you want for minimal cost and change it up any time you care to. -

The dollar store here has removable decals that have nice sayings that would be cute and add a positive thought on the risers. -

Put tin ceiling tile on the riser of each step. -
