I hope it is not for outside use. Tiles are best laid out by wet set process, you need a very leveled smooth underlayment. Usually one starts with nailing a new 1/8" to 1/2" thick plywood or if you have cement floor it is not needed. There are compounds available to level the floor, if you will be washing the floor slight slope towards a drain in needed. Thinset method uses a tile adhesive which is troweled and tiles laid with grout spacers and once set the joints are grouted with a mixture of grout compound and some admix to keep the grout flexible.

Achla Bahl Madan provided good information. Some mosaics are purchased in sheets with a web backing to keep all the pieces in place. You can also create your own individual design using individual tiles. Grout can be sanded or unsanded. Sanded grout is generally when you have larger spaces between tiles, unsanded is for walls with thin grout lines. I’m currently working on a mosaic tile project. I don’t have any pictures of the mastic on the wall, but I’ve provided pictures of marble mosaic tile before and after grouting. When in doubt, go to a tile store and ask for help. They can provide great information and ideas for your mosaic tile project.
