Hi Karen. I'm Cindy. You could use a dresser to make an island with. Typical height for a kitchen island is between 36" to 42" high. I recommend you go 42", You could also make a kitchen island with a couple of cabinets. Both options would offer a lot of storage space. Good luck Karen.
