How to hang a “barn” door in a small bedroom door?

I don’t have a large saw, and hand arthritis makes my projects very slow. I was wondering if hooks could be attached to the right door-say 3-4, and have the top of the door running along a transverse metal pole, like a decorative curtain rod, instead of installing a track? Thanks. I love this site!! Anyone who can help, I welcome your ideas!!

You could use a pre-made door... we did... just make sure it is at least 2-3 inches wider than the door opening
And....FYI... there are 2 different types of barn door hardware the "C" channel type and the "rail" type and I have seen some of the DIY guys on Tv use black iron pipe for the rail and large "eye" screws... but... you should put small casters or wheels on the bottom of the door to help carry the weight a regular curtain rod will not be heavy enough to to do the job safely..
Note: I have seen the "rail" type of hardware for sale on HOUZZ or on Ebay for under $75 (6 foot) and it includes every thing you need.

I saw one done the way you were talking about, so yes you can. I found some pictures of the top of doors done that way. I like the first one best it looks like it would hold more weight. Good luck Ann, I have arthritis too so I know how difficult it is to do what others think is easy.

to Marty and Alice for including pictures clearly showing the difference in barn door mounting rail systems.
