Which windows do I put shutters on?

Hi Cyndi, I think it would be OK to put shutters on the front and side windows. I recommend cutting the shutters down to the same size to accommodate your large front window. Hope this helps.Helpful Reply -

The black shutters would look great if you omit the awning in front and add a long black window box. That type of awning dates a brick house and I'm sure those were there from the last owners. I hope you didn't mine me adding that comment. You have a nice brick house and this will give it the look your looking for 😇Helpful Reply -

NO shutters on large window! I don't know what the rest of your brick home looks like so can't say about the other windows but definitely a big NO on the large window (you're basically trying to put a round peg in a square hole). If you can live w/o the awning, I think Barb's suggestion of a black window box would look lovely. Hope this helps.Helpful Reply -

I agree with Misssueellen, do not put shutters on that large window! Shutters should look like they can close and cover the window. I recently put new shutters on the front of my Cape Cod style house and added shutters to the downstairs side windows since they are easily visible from the street. Upstairs windows are visible too but the correct size shutters would not fit due to the slope of the roof, so no shutters upstairs. If you really want to add interest to the right side of that window you could consider a small trellis with a vine that will not grow out of control or take root in your brick. I know that window will look "naked" when you take down the awning but you will get used to it very quickly.Helpful Reply -

I like the awning but if you must take it down . when I made shutters for our house I put them on all windows that had a street view.Helpful Reply -

I've read that shutters' size should be able to cover the whole window. Therefore, a nice window box with greens, flowers and trailing plants would look fresh and clean.Helpful Reply -

Are you thinking about using shutters because you can shut them and protect the window glass in case of high winds? Shutters cover the window and stops the light from coming in and the inside of your house will become dark in every room you have shutters in unless you are only using them to mount beside the window glass as décor and it won't block any light. If it's only for mounting on the side, it should look great but don't cover the window at all.Helpful Reply -

6" are not enough, and you can't have 2 different-sized shutters. I had shutters in a smaller space a long time ago, and it never looked right. I would never do it again.http://www.finehomebuilding.com/2013/11/07/getting-shutters-righthttps://www.simplyshutters.co.uk/simply-shutters-blog/things-to-consider-when-measuring-for-decorative-exterior-shutters.htmlhttp://www.oldhouseguy.com/shutters/Helpful Reply -

With the style of your brick house I would do front ones only in black and omit the awning it dates the house from past oweners and remove the bush and add a long window box and flower boxes along the porch pillars. I can't tell by the angle of the picture of what your porch looks like pain't the black door with full glass door and a gold bottom kick plate. You don't want to many colors going on.Helpful Reply -
