Broken Headboard to Bench Project

I saw this unique headboard out of the corner of my eye as we were driving past Goodwill. We turned around and for $10 it was all mine. Except it wouldn't fit in the car.

My husband went back to pick it up and they wouldn't give it to him without the receipt, even though his name was on it. So I went to get it and then it was broken. BOO! They offered my money back, but I wanted the headboard and decided to tackle the repair job too. After wood glue and clamps went flying I sanded and repaired my sweet little headboard.

I coated it with an off-white homemade chalk paint and distressed it down a bit.

I used Elmer's wood glue to put the pieces back together.

We flipped the footboard upside down and trimmed off the spindles a bit to make the two ledges even. Then we boxed it out with some side rails. We eventually added corner brackets for added strength.

I used an old board I pulled from the neighbor's trash and my husband helped cut it down to fit the bench seat. Plus I got to keep the painted on part to use somewhere else :)

After nailing and securing it all together I added a rope arm rest through the casters we left on the footboard. I love that I saved this headboard from a sure trip to the dump and salvaged it to something my family can enjoy and love.

Would you consider decoupage-ing something over the area in the center where you can still see thr old lines. And, bringing out the details would be very attractive. Nice job putting it all together!

Nice job, but I like the original natural wood showing all the details, perhaps clear coating it would have enhanced all the detailing.
