Painting vinyl shutters

Janet Pizaro on Sep 11, 2015After doing some research you need to clean the shutters to rid mildew dirt etc.I would use a latex primer first since you are making them darker Allow to dry before applying an exterior latex paint.Helpful Reply

B. Enne on Sep 11, 2015I know that generally when you paint vinyl, you shouldn't go darker than the factory finish because it causes warping.(It even did that on my JH siding). If you stick to a shade close to the hunter green tone, you should be okay, and make sure it is acrylic or acrylic latex NOT regular latex...it holds up better on vinyl. Otherwise, you could buy specialized paint for vinyl, (that would be my 1st choice): http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-collection/vinylsafe-colors-for-vinyl-siding/ http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-ca/for-contractors/vinyl-select http://www.ehow.com/way_5395053_paint-vinyl.html http://www.ehow.com/how_4613098_paint-vinyl-shutters.html#page=6 http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-ca/for-contractors/painting-vinyl-and-aluminum-sidingHelpful Reply

Jonnie Hammon on Sep 12, 2015Clean the shutters with TSP ( trisodiomphosphate), lightly sand, add a bonding primer, then paint. Afterwards, add a non yellowing polyurethane. At least two coats, at the very least, more is better. Then enjoy the new look.Helpful Reply

Brenda Nealy on Sep 12, 2015I have painted my vinyl shutters twice in 14 years. Pressure wash, and then paint that afternoon or next day. I went from a burgundy color ( that looked horrible with the "peach" colored brick of my house) to a sage green and then to a light green. I did not prime either time, my paint covered perfectly and it was still in perfect shape ( except for the fade from the sun) when I decided to change the color again. I used Color Place paint and the second time around I didn't even take the shutters down. I used a good craft brush for the sides and didn't get 1 drop on the house. It's an easy job that can be finished in one day if you clean them the day before.Helpful Reply

Jeanne Nelson on Sep 12, 2015I have painted mine for over 30 years using outdoor paint. I have never had a problem. They don't peel, over time (years) the color will fade some. I haven't even sanded. Easy as can be. Shutters began white, I have changed them to tan, blue and black. Just checked the can I used 3 years ago - It's Behr exterior latex, semi-gloss.Helpful Reply
