Make sure you rid of any debris first. I would recommend using a sealer prior to painting.I would also recommend a heat resistant paint.

If its just the ordinary brick fireplace all you need is regular wall paint. You can dilute it and give the fireplace a wash or you can use both roller and brushes to cover it with a solid coat or two of paint. No sealer required. EASY !! I have also used craft acrylic paint to tint a wash to various shades of reds and golds when I wasn't painting brick a solid white. Sometimes people just want to tone down the color of dark red or brown brick. I always keep a jar of water handy too, when using a brush to do a wash, or to help the paint penetrate the brick.

Be sure to clean it really good. User a wire brush to clean all the soot. Paint with a primer. Then paint

Brick is a porous and it will need to be cleaned first, then sealed and then painted. As far as the type of paint and sealer to use, I would recommend that you go to a paint store and ask for their recommendations for the sealer and paint. Sherwin Williams has paint and sealer products that are specifically made for brick and concrete.

I would advise you to "dry-brush" or lightly brush the paint on so that the original color shows through. It looks so much better than a solid color on brick.
