Help with kitchen fluorescent light

My kitchen light fixture is old style fluorescent (installed 1990), It flickers and will only light two of the four tubes. Am I right that this is a ballast problem? I know that they are no longer available so does this mean that the whole thing has to be replaced?

Are you sure you can't purchase a replacement ballast? I did a quick Google search and found some at HoDe.http://www.homedepot.com/b/Lighting-Ceiling-Fans-Indoor-Lighting-Parts-Accessories-Fluorescent-Lighting-Accessories-Replacement-Ballasts/N-5yc1vZc7nx

I'm with Becky. I am thinking the ballast is getting bad. If ballast are becoming difficult to find, I might be inclined in installing an up to date lighting system. Becky says you can find some. That would give you time to research other lighting systems and there cost. Hope that helps.

We have replaced ballasts on more than one occasion. Florescent lighting isn't going away anytime soon. They are used in too many commercial settings.

Another thought, this is the perfect time to replace your fluorescent fixture. They are very hard on the eyes. I'd recommend something that uses standard size bulbs that you can put full spectrum LED lighting in. We recently changed out a fixture in our kitchen, no reason other than I wanted a change, and purchased SP LED bulbs and I've never been so happy with the light in our kitchen, which is in the center of our home with no windows.

You can replace the ballast but older style florescent fixtures use a lot of power. If you want to stay with a florescent light the newer styles take far less electricity and it would probably save you money to update.
