Jhunt10 on Sep 23, 2015In the South this year we have had off the charts humidity resulting in vents & other areas showing mold. The hot steamy air comes from the attic- hits the icy cold air coming from the HVAC vent forms condensation which due to the heavy amount of moisture in the air, forms mold. Fixes = seal with elasticmeric caulk the vent to ceiling, run exhaust fans ( more than 75 CFM ) when cooking & showering, purchase a small portable DEhumidifier 70 pints, run this every day during summer. This will necessitate emptying twice a day. Keep your thermostat around 75 because your HVAC unit is a faint dehumidifier. If you set it too high it will not be called to turn on – so humidity stays in your home and does not leave. This year has been really hot & humid!Helpful Reply

Ken on Sep 24, 2015The new codes require the vents to go outside such as your bathroom vent fan etc. you may have to retro-fit to eliminate the problem completely.Helpful Reply
