This is the beginning structure, it is really rough! Lots of gouges and marks, my only plan was to clean it up, not make it perfect.
I sanded it with medium sand paper (first 80 grit and then 120) until I was able to take the finish off. I did this to the outside of the dresser and the drawers. Afterwards I used a paint brush to prime all of the sanded surfaces.
After priming, I used a fine grit sand paper to smooth the surface and remove any evident brush strokes from painting the primer.
I then applied 3 coats of my paint color. Mostly I used a roller for a better look and used a brush when needed for small areas. When everything dried I used a spray polyurethane to coat all of the painted areas.
This picture represents the templates I made from tape so I knew exactly where to mark my holes for the hardware. The large holes you see are from wooden pegs where the old knobs were. My plan was to find hardware that covered the large holes up and allow me to place screws on either side of it.
My 10 year old son found the perfect hardware!! I laid the drawers down and placed the hardware on top so I could get a visual of how it would look and to make sure everything was even.
I bought a new drill all of my own!! I decided it was time to stop waiting for my husband to do all the "man" labor on my projects and I would do all of it myself. In the future I hope to learn to do all of my own woodworking and construction. We'll see :)
I measured, remeasured and measured again and I think it came out perfectly! The room is painted gray with a wall-papered accent wall that is a "Paris" theme and has splashes of this dark merlot color in it, thus my reason for the bold color on for the dresser. I added a small marble top to it and added a vanity mirror above to complete the look.
Here is my finished product! It took 3 days and cost under $125. (excluding my new drill, that was extra!)
