Sticky turtles

I kept my son's ninja turtles in the attic until I had grandchildren. Got them from attic where they have been for over 10 years. They feel sticky to the touch! Can't see anything on them. I have scrubbed them, soaked them in spic and span, wiped them down with alcohol and nothing has worked. They are the turtles from the 80's. My son said they don't make them like this anymore. Colors are not painted on! This Nana needs a solution, literally! Thanks!

Do you have a ratio you use for this? Also do you mix water with them? I think I am on the road to recovery finally. Thank you so much for asking!!!

I have read about this problem before. It is particularly common with vintage Barbie dolls but other toys can be affected too. Polyvinyl chloride oozes from the plastic and becomes sticky. Apparently it poses a potential health risk so you might want to do some research on this before you pass them on to another generation of children to play with. As I recall, the problem has been named something like "Sticky Doll Syndrome" or "Sticky Doll Disease." I wish I could find the article I read about it. If I do, I'll come back and update with a link/links.

Thanks Shari! I am definitely going to do more research. If you do find the article I would appreciate the link! Thanks for taking the time to answer!

I found quite a bit via a Google search linked below. I read a bit, scary, but thought I'd pass it on to you @Kim to read for yourself.

Thanks Becky. I read some things on it but what I read was just specific to these dolls that have a certain name which I can not remember right now of course. It also said the toy would smell like vinegar which none of these do. Going to try the vinegar and soda and see if that works. Also thought of maybe goo gone for another try if the vinegar doesn't work. Thanks for your comment and for checking that out!

@You're very welcome Kim. You might want to call Mattel, I think that's who made the Turtles, and see what they were made of just to be on the safe side. I've seen too much cancer to not be concerned about things like this and little ones health.

    Yes do a 50/50 ratio.
