Wondering when peonies can be cut back. I live in Oh. zone 4. Thank you in advance.

assuming that they are finished flowering and the leaves are browning you can cut them back now.

zone 4 is really cold. Now would be a great time to cut them back. If they get mildew after flowering (usually around August) you can cut them back then. Remember never to mulch peonies.

They need their leaves to feed the tubers, so I cut them back when the leaves have pretty much turned brown or yellow.

Now is good. They should be turning brown. I cut mine back a few weeks ago, all except the ITOH which still look pretty good.

Hi, I am also in Ohio! Zone 5. I have already cut mine back, they were starting to look ragged so off the came! Good luck!

Martha, (my sister"s name too) that's what I was actually wondering about. They had mildew like Chase said and I wanted to showcase my new Mum so off they came. Hope it was a good decision as one of the peonies came from my old home. Guess next yr. will tell. Thanks to you all.

Deb. you might try something I've been using on my Zinnias for years! By the way, I haven't purchased seeds for over 20 years! I just harvest my seeds when I dead head the dried flowers. They are huge and picture perfect yer after year. Now, what I have been using to control mildew on all my flowers that need it is a mixture of 1 tsp of regular baking soda, 1 tsp of liquid soap and a quart of water. Just adjusts the amounts as needed! Hope it works for you!
