KMS Woodworks on Feb 21, 2013How old is your kid?...not licking may be tough to ID with really young kids. In extreme weather ( ski touring at 10,000 to 12,000 feet) I have used a product from dermatone. It also has UV protection spf 25 or so) diet and proper hydration will also come to play. if he is young get some stuff that tastes bad (carmex or the vasoline gel)...not some yummy berry flavor...this will help curb any "licking". http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/HikingCamping/HealthSafety/SunProtection/PRD~4002-508/dermatone-spf-23-skin-protector.jsp I keep this little "tin" in the sleeve pocket of my goretex shell. I have only needed it on some of these high altitude romps.Helpful Reply

Dee W on Feb 21, 2013There may be an underlying cause, is he a mouth breather or suffer from sinus issues or allergies? Every night before he goes to bed put a warm washcloth to his lips to soften the skin and then buff lightly. I prefer Blistex-3 tubes(hydrate, repair and protect in one pack) Twice a week, after softening his lips, use a bit of sugar and rub that on his lips to help remove dead, drying skin. Coat with Blistex.Helpful Reply

Diane Kaul on Feb 21, 2013Thanks for the suggestions everyone! He is almost 10 and unfortunately, super sensitive to things that smell bad, and will wipe it off, no matter what!! We have tried buffing the skin to help remove the dry skin, only once so far. He does have a cold right now, so breathing through the mouth might be contributing to it. I'll have to head to CVS tonight and see about getting one of these.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Feb 21, 2013Blistex works great. I had the same issues when I was younger. And as an avid skier I always had chapped and cracked lips. That was the only thing that worked. It comes in a very small tube, it is not a waxy type lip balm, but a cream that you rub in.Helpful Reply

Gail Salminen on Feb 22, 2013@Diane Kaul - lots of water/fluids is needed for a cold. I am with @Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on the effectiveness of Blistex. Vicks, rubbed lightly on the lips, and aroundr the nose if that is chapped to can have a positive effect by morning. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Shanna Gilbert on Feb 22, 2013I have extremely dry lips myself. I asked my pharmacist for his recommendation and he said Carmex was the best. He said it was the best medicated treatment and they now have it in Cherry and Strawberry. He also said to use a humidifier at night. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Tess Borgra on Dec 14, 2014I'd stay away from the petroleum based products like Blistex and Carmex. I've always had super dry lips until I switched to the beeswax products like Burt's Bee's. Try his medicated one first to heal.Helpful Reply
