What will the closet be used for? Clothes, towels, off season items?

Line the entire room with shelves. I did this to my closet and it now holds canning jars and canning equipment.

If you are not going to use the closet for hanging items put shelving up and use baskets for storing your items.

Here's what I did with my small reach-in clothes closet: Took out the side-to side clothes bar and put in two front-to-back rods on either side of the door, and put a cheap short bookcase in the center for folded items, shoes and purses. Suitcases hold off-season clothes and go on the floor under the clothes rods.

Dona, if you are talking of a clothing closet, you might find the info I shared awhile back when I wrote for HomeSpot helpful. I'm obsessive about organizing so I'd be happy to help with any other ideas that might fit your style of closet. Sharing a picture of the closet would help too, as there are many different types of closets. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/-2424050
