Staining over fresh whitewashing

Help.. I am in the middle of whitewashing a new raw wood sliding door. I have conditioned and applied 3 coats of Minwax whitewash. My husband isn't crazy about it. a bit bland. Has anyone applied a coat of darker stain over fresh whitewash. I am thinking of trying a grey with a quick whip off to achieve an old wood look.

As long as the whitewash is dry I believe you can just stain right over this. But if you are not positiive min wax has there own web site.

Thanks! I did use a grey stain and it has a rustic wood look. Not sure I like it, but will work for no?

Kandy, I know the product you are speaking of, as I've used it in the past. It will depend on how thick of a coating you did, as to what results you will get by just staining over it, but I agree with Janet, it is doable. If it's heavily coated you might want to sand off some of the whitewash and then use a darker water based stain so it won't lighten it too much. Good luck! Please share your results too. I'd love to see them.

Thanks Becky. I did use the grey stain over it. Luckily I didn't add the Polycrylic yet. My husband likes it..I preferred the whitewash. Live and learn.

@Kandy, I'm sorry you aren't completely happy with it. Maybe it will grow on you. I've found that sometimes when a project isn't going the way I thought it would, that by the time I'm finished I hate it. I mean really hate it. Surprisingly, for the most part, after a few weeks the thing will start growing on me and all of a sudden a decade goes by and realize how much I've come to really like it. I hope that happens to you too.

Can I use white water based enamel with 50-50 paint/water to whitewash a cupboard?
