A secret garden that we designed and installed for a client.

The guest enters the secrete garden along the stem, and the fern frond is the focal point of the small space. A mixture of evergreen and deciduous ferns were planted around the garden.

What a neat space. I assume this was not a secret to the client. =)

The client should enjoy a fiddlehead salad on the bench in the spring.

Beautiful! I'm planning a rose garden/paved walkway for my front entry and would love to incorporate something like this... especially since I'm in Kansas! I should use yellow bricks!

I'm a transplant to the south and I still just can't stand all the pine straw in every bloody garden! In the north you either use mulch (yuck) or leave it naked! I personally would love the look of roses and hydrangea with maybe a trellis for wisteria and just top soil so it doesn't look like it needed to be raked because its under a shedding pine tree. It's a terribly wonderful concept though! ,y great gran had a traditional English rose garden before I was born and there were paths and ...»
everything. They ripped it out but left the bushes at the far end and in the corner there was a little alcove almost where you could be hidden from the rest of the yard and that was my favorite place to hide and read! Everyone should have a secret garden!

Yeah not a big fan of the pine straw either,,,, i would also put in a water feature for that babbling brook sound to drown out noises from beyond the secret garden...

Erin I love the thought. This design lends itself to so many planting options. I have a veggie garden that is in my mind from this design idea. Thanks for the beautiful idea. Maybe possibly incorporating an Indian medicine wheel into the arrangement.

That is a really fantastic use of a shady spot. Curves and natural forms are lovely when repeated by paths and other created items in the garden.

very nice design--I like the idea of incorporating a rose garden or other large flowering trees and shrubs. Think I'd like to find a swing, glider or hammock at the end of the path too!

Beautiful. What is it made out of? Pavers with gravel?
    on Jan 14, 2012 · Like 0

We custom cut concrete pavers to create the fern fiddlehead. The pavers are mortared to a concrete footing that we poured. The other material is mini slate chips. We used a metal edging on the perimeter to contain the slate chips. We decided to pour the concrete footing and mortar the pavers in place to prevent and moving or shifting of all the custom cut pieces. The last thing we would want to hear is that all the detail was lost due to routine foot traffic in the secret garden.

Since this design is one of a fern I would add some ferns around it...just sayin'! Love doing mosaics and designs with pavers and such. Also someone else mentioned a water feature. It would be nice too. Beautiful!

Kris, your suggestion was already done, just hard to see in the photo. The entire pathway and sitting area was planted with groupings of different ferns. If you look closely, you can see the 1 gallon ferns that are just barely around the perimeter of the area. We also discussed a small water feature, but they wanted to not have one at this time.

Also, I ran into this client over the weekend and found out that they are having to move due ...»

to a fantastic job opportunity the wife received. They will be in Charleston going forward, another wonderful city.
