Lori Johansen on Oct 14, 2015We just made our kitchen island using 2 x 6's from the local lumber yard. We had them trimmed on the sides as they were a bit rounded. We glued them and let them sit for about 24-hours. Sanding and oiling/waxing to finish. LOVE my island!! You need to become familiar with Osmo Top Oil finishes for wooden kitchen work tops and general wooden interior trims. I used it on my Paperstone counter top as well and it is gorgeous. It is from Germany and is a special oil and wax comination made of natural plant oils and waxes. It is a food grade approved treatment, much better than mineral oils. I worked for a butcher block manufacturer and that is all that we used. It is imported into the USA by Environmental Home Center -- 206.682.7332, www.osmo.com.Helpful Reply

Jhmarie on Oct 14, 2015I got mine at Menard's. It was 3 ft by 6 ft and I had my local friendly carpenter cut it down to 4 ft. He also planed it for me. it was on sale for less than $100. It is birch. Sorry I just realized you need 7ft.Helpful Reply

Jeani Miller Miner on Oct 14, 2015have you considered reclaimed wood? If you live that far from an IKEA i'm making an assumption that perhaps you're out in the country somewhere?? Check locally for reclaimed.Helpful Reply

Renata on Oct 15, 2015I found a butcher block type , (prolly a 12x16) at Home Dept. They are at the end of the isle in the piece section. Buy how many u want depending on the thickness and length u want. Glue each on top of the other , depending on how long and how thick u want them. ( elmers wood glue and clamps will work for this) Then sand , 120 then 220 grit. Then u will have to seal with a wood counter sealant and let cure for a couple of days.Helpful Reply
