taking out wood stove

KMS Woodworks on Feb 24, 2013Is this a wall penetration or through the roof? Walls are pretty easy, you remove the "thimble" of flange assembly and then can insulate and repair or replace the wall covering. In roof situations most folks will leave the chimney flashing in place until the next "roofing" job is required. Unless you have a current leak and are looking for a smooth roof line then the repair will require some blocking, sheathing, underlayment shingles etc.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Feb 24, 2013Cap the top. and seal the bottom. Use a large square stone on the top with a sheet of asphalt paper under to prevent any seepage from the stone getting down the abandoned flue pipe. Ideally you should use a foam board at the top and bottom to insulate and to stop any air traveling. Then simply cover over with drywall. I would put some photos of the fire place wood stove inside the wall as someday in 50 years or so someone may open the wall and find this gem and wonder what it looked like before someone covered it over.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Feb 25, 2013I like Bobs Time capsule idea...one thing that may also come in handy is some spray foam. I have used it to fill some gaps and opening in some repairs before the drywall and mud job.Helpful Reply
