Succulent Planters From Light Fixtures

I love being thrifty and repurposing things, so when my friend Leslie offered me her old bathroom light fixtures I took them, of course.
These light fixtures intrigued me, well the curved glass did, and I kept pondering on them each time I passed by in the garage...what to do with them? Hmmm. After months of pondering and several different ideas, I decided to make this my project and turn them into succulent planters.
I love the texture of the glass with the wood and leather these planters provide.
Here is one of the light fixtures I got from my friend. I also got another one that had 4 lights on it. Which gave me nine glass pieces total.
This is scrap deck wood I used to build the planters, it is cedar.
After removing the glass I used it to figure out how to build my planters. I traced the shape of the glass and cut the wood out with a jigsaw.
Then I glued and nailed the planter base to the back. I drilled holes for attaching the glass hardware that was on the light fixture and holes for the leather hangers (not pictured). After applying some natural stain and letting it dry, I planted my succulents and was done!

These planters are fun because they are so versatile! You can use them as book ends...

Or hang them...

Or style them together or by themselves! I love them, especially because they bring some life to my bedroom!

For those worried about drainage, it is not a problem, the glass is not flush on the sides and allows the water to drain when I give them a drink, I just have to make sure to move them to a place where they can drain for a minute. :)

Brilliant! I buy disposable cutting trays from an unamed dollar (tree) store. 2 per pack. i'm going to use these as the "shades" because of their flexibility. I'll try a glue gun to make the texture. Awesome creativity award to you!
