Dana, the ground is not frozen so yes go for it. I too have bulbs to plant and hope to get them in the ground this weekend. A soil that has a good amount of organic material mixed in and is well drained is ideal. The rule of thumb for how deep to plant your bulbs is 3 x the height of the bulb, so a 3" bulb would need to be planted at a depth of 9 inches. In general plant them 3-4 times the width of the bulb (the distance between bulbs) I mix in some Perma till (expanded slate) when I ...»
plant my bulbs and it really helps with compacted soils. As for fertilizer Brent Heath of Brent and Becky's Bulbs recommends for Daffodils a slow-release Daffodil fertilizer (5-10-20) if you use something like "Holland Bulb Booster" for daffodils, supplement with extra potash. Bonemeal is not a complete fertilizer.

One more thing- don't mix fertilizer in the hole when you plant the bulbs.

I would top dress early next spring and then each fall after that. Happy planting.

I've found bulbs to be extremely forgiving, Dana. Take Erica's advice and get planting!

I don't have bulbs to plant, but is it too late to separate and replant Iris?

If you mean bearded iris, Gene, yes it is too late this season. There is too little time for the plant to establish a root system. Late summer/early fall is the traditional time for dividing iris.
