Vintage Boxsprings to Wall Art

What would you do if you saw a perfectly good set of boxsprings laying on a curb? I can tell you what I did. I pulled to the side so fast, my son's face nearly slammed into the car's side window.
OK. Not really. After all, he is 25-years-old. But, I did pull over and try to pop the boxsprings into the back of my little car. This is when I learned they were truly vintage, a full-sized set, in perfect condition, and weighed about 75 pounds. Did they fit in my car? Of course not. What was I thinking?
Happily, they were out for garbage pickup just a few houses down the street. And, even though I could almost see my house from theirs, finding a way to haul these heavy, awkward springs down a slippery hill and up a steep driveway during part of the Hurricane Joaquin rains seemed totally unlikely.
Then, it hit me. Just get the guys to use one of our hand carts and simply roll the springs down the street. Yes, roll it down the street. Yes, in the rain.
So, after some coaxing, that's exactly how this sweet piece made it home.
I'm sorry there are no pictures of it laying on the curb or of its comical ride home on the rickety hand cart, but the rain was just too much for my camera or phone to manage. In fact, we just had to drop the springs onto the driveway and leave them....for several days....until the weather finally cleared.
Once the sun popped out, they were power washed and jazzed up with a little creamy-white chalk paint and brown glaze. Then, a shelf and a type of wood cleat were built to hold the weight and the springs onto the wall.
After that, the accessories were added. And, here she is. My very first roadside rescue.
