Care of hosta plants for winter

Kim Davino on Oct 20, 2015Hostas are basically indestructible! I mow over them each year, usually after the first frost. In the fall is a good time to spread them out by separating them and adding to other areasHelpful Reply

Janet Pizaro on Oct 20, 2015No you do not have to cut them.Just leave them be as they feed off the leaves for the next growing season.Helpful Reply

Chris Felter on Oct 20, 2015After a heavy frost the hosta plant will turn brown. I leave them be and mulch them in with the rest of my plantsHelpful Reply

Marilyn Stein on Oct 20, 2015Mine are in a perennial bed and I just let them die back on their own. When the leaves turn slimy, I just gather them up and toss them. The plants come back beautifully every year.Helpful Reply

Susan N on Oct 20, 2015TO ALL YOU HELPFUL HOSTA EXPERTS: I have an area in my yard (So Cal.) that is hard shade in the winter and partly blazing full sun in the summer. Will Hostas grow in this combo of growing conditions? I love how they look but I don't want to lose some of them as the sun exposure changes! If Hostas won't work, what else can take the mix of sun and shade but is still low growing? THANK YOU!!!Helpful Reply

Jann Olson on May 19, 2016Hostas will scorch in the sun. They do much better in the shade. You don't need to cut them back, but won't hurt if you do. I just leave mine and then clean up the debris in the spring. I do cut back any leaves that have damage so that they continue to look pretty.Helpful Reply
