How to refinish an old tub
-
Paul Hayden on Oct 25, 2015Several companies make an epoxy finish that can be quite good for refinishing a tub/shower. I believe Homax is one company, and Rust-Oleum. Proper preparation is essential, with thorough cleaning and even etching with a proper acid, sanding, and rinsing. Allow to dry thoroughly, and the epoxy (2-part is perhaps best) finish can be brushed or sprayed. It is a 2-3 day procedure (not full days). Extremely adequate ventilation is essential - WEAR A MASK FOR FUMES!!! Mask off surrounding areas, and remove the hardware you can. Look up the procedure on YouTube. I used two coats, with enough drying/curing time between coats (follow instructions). Our clawfoot tub is still beautiful after about 10 years of limited use. Use proper caution in cleaning afterwards. To hire someone to do this could run $500-$600, but it might well be worth it!!!Helpful Reply

Jalolo on Oct 26, 2015I wouldn't tackle this myself. I hired a company to refinish my tub and they also added a non-skid substance to the bottom. The tub looks great and I don't worry about slipping and falling. Cost around $300, but well worth it.Helpful Reply

Ruth on Nov 05, 2015If you don't feel you can tackle this yourself, or the painting doesn't go as planned- there are companies that make acrylic liners for bathtubs that are reasonable. We had our 45 year old cast iron tub done about 14 years ago and it still looks like new. Another choice to think about.Helpful Reply
