On position of a rocker switch

I have several rocker switches in the house and some turn on when pressed up while others when down. Can someone tell me the convention of their positions in north america?

When the top part of the switch is in, it's on, when it's out its off. The picture you posted shows that the lights are off :D Hope this helped.

Yes, top in would be on, but that can change when switches are part of a multiple switch, such as two switches on either side of a room controlling one light.
