Color advice re: pantry door

Hello
I would like some advice on how to live with the color of this pantry door.
I don't actually mind the color itself but am unsure what other colors go with it. As it is an open plan apartment I have stayed safe and opted for black and white decor as I can't think of any other colors that would blend in with the cupboard color. I had lime green nik nacs to bring a bit of color in but feel it is time for a change. Also thought that I could cover it with removable transfers. (It is a rental so can not be painted over).

If your not allowed to paint to only suggestions I can come up with is to put a removable piece of contact paper or dress it up with removable decals.

Bron, I think you had a great idea going with the lime green. Here's some Design seeds to show you other colors that would work in the mix. Since you have an all white back drop, you could add all the colors of the rainbow throughout the space.

Just painted my den a raspberry-burgundy colour. So many colours go with it - greens, black, tans, gold, yellows, blues.

Why not bring the door up to date, with some wooden trim to make it look as if it is panelled, you could paint the trim to match the surrounding colour scheme, and stick it on with double sided tape, so it could be removed at a later date.

There are SO many removablevinyl decals out there - words, patterns, etc. I would find one with a pattern or even cut your own out of a roll of removable contact paper .

I actually love the color as it displays on my computer, which may not be accurate. Here are a couple of ideas ---- paint a piece of cardboard (from a refrigerator box maybe) and attach with double sided tape; use liquid starch to cover it with fabric (search "how to hang fabric as wall paper"); using tacks or staples, attach a piece of fabric to it; ask the landlord if you can paint it. Good luck!

The black, and white scheme, will make the door stand out more as a focal point. If that is what you like, then use that color throughout the open space, as if it is intentional, with more pops of that color, here and there. If you want it to sort of fade into the background, use complimentary colors, from the color wheel. Or for more interest use contrasting colors in your dishes, etc.. My daughter has red dishes, pots, and pans, cooking utensils, small appliances, etc... in a white and golden oak kitchen, with a dark brown, and black granite countertop. Renting limits what you can do about painting, thank heaven, or her whole apartment would be red, but if you can gain permission, you can more of that color to areas in your apt., or change that color to a more neutral color, or lighten it by adding a wash, or glaze. Have fun with it.

You know I didn't actually think about bringing that maroon color into other areas of the apartment. I guess it would look good in cushions etc... Thanks for that I will try it and see.

anumber of years ago we were renting a home while our kitchen was being 'redone' and there was a flourescent green door in my daughters bedroom that just didn't blend at all. We removed the door and stored it hinges and all in the garage, purchased a new door for her closet and painted it pure white to blend with her purples and pinks. When we packed to move, we removed our new door, replace the old one and brought our new painted door to our own home. It's now a cutting table for me in my quilt studio. Just a thought?

You could add some trim to the door to make it and the color a feature. Lowes and Home Depot have a selection of decorative trim already primed, you just need to put a coat of white to match your cabinets.

You could wallpaper it with a dry strip-able wallpaper. When you leave, just peel off the wallpaper and clean off the wallpaper paste. Whole new look, with very little trouble and no damage to the door.

@Bron Almost all wallpapers are dry strip-able. You can find wallpaper on ebay. Sometimes I've found new rolls of wallpaper at second hand stores. (Goodwill, etc.) It's easy to put up and use.

If you use the black and white to make it stand out, you could use some black and white tape to accent it. Just some random vertical stripes would look interesting. You could attach fabric to it in any color/design with the stripable wall paper paste.

did you try contacting the landlord? i don't think he would mind if you painted it white like the rest of the kitchen.
    • Bron Bron on Nov 08, 2015
no chance of a paint job. It is hard to see on the photo but the cupboards aren't white, they are a light tan. Thanks for your input though I appreciate it :)

I agree with d Fuhrman. The landlord would benefit from a door makeover.

You could use some 3M fasteners and attach some giant decorative letters to the door .... EAT or DINE, or Bon Appetite...
