Douglas Hunt on Dec 09, 2011I'm not sure what the estimate was for, Jessica, but I'm not surprised there are folks out there trying to take an advantage. That's one of the many reasons you never want to get one estimate. Trying looking at contractors in your area who are Hometalk members. You can find them using the search function at the top of the page and the dropdown menu for contractors. Good luck!Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Dec 09, 2011Jessica what was the quote for? Do you have a square footage, what type and if that includes installation and what extent would be needed for preparation? All that said, definitely get a couple of more quotes to see how out of line (or not) your current quote is. It might not be (or it might ) as unreasonable as it seems to be, and if you get more quotes you can probably figure it out pretty quickly.Helpful Reply

Nautilus Homes on Dec 09, 2011If you chose to be qoted by a contractor because the had "discount" in their name then "That is the problem". You should be pricing professionals for whatever work you are getting quoted. Contact the local affiliate of the National Association of Home Builders to find professional remodeler's in your market.Helpful Reply

Jessica L on Dec 10, 2011the quote was for a yard clean up. I really feel like it was because i'm a woman. He just gave me that vibe. I needed some bushes removed. Lawn mowed. One tree trimmed. Bout 4 rose bushes trimmed down. it's fall so leaves raked. and some weed control. My dad had his entire hillside cleared for 700.00. It's just insane!Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Dec 10, 2011Got to be the zip code you live in. Or the contractor did not want the job and deliberately made it higher so you would not go for it. Landscaping has all sorts of hidden costs. In our area we are not allowed to bring clippings, branches or any landscaping debris out of the county we reside in. This makes it much more costly for someone from another county to work in another. You also cannot compare one job with another. Clearing a hillside with a brush hog can be done quite quickly, while removal of bushes with roots may be more work. So even though your thinking it may be expensive it may not be for the types of work your having done. Have you had other quotes? Of course you must compare these as well to get an understanding what things really cost. Just be sure you inform each contractor of exactly the same job and your desired results. Just to be fair with all of them. I do agree however this does sound a bit high, but not really seeing your yard and the job at hand makes it difficult to tell you if this is a rip off or not.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Dec 10, 2011Given your additional information, it would be impossible for us to determine if your quote is reasonable or not unless they are located close to you. I agree with Woodbridge that there may be cost factors that are location specific. One question though, how long has it been since the lawn was mowed?Helpful Reply
