Hostas

Kincaid99 on Nov 08, 2015Splitting Hosta,, I have split it different times of the year, the Fall is best, make sure yours is in full shade, keep them watered and will do fine. We dig the whole ball which can be large, take a shovel and drive it in where the leaves are growing away from each other, (pull the leaves back and you can see a separation like two plants joined together) Take the shovel and slice through just like you were digging, step on the shovel while someone holds the clump. You can use a knife but we prefer the shovel, make sure to get plenty of young roots on each clump. Some good plant food for Hosta type plants is good also as you plant each new start. Hope this helps. .Helpful Reply

Janet Pizaro on Nov 08, 2015Personally you should wait till the spring just as the hostas are emerging from the ground, as this way you can see where you need to split them.Helpful Reply

Patty S on Nov 08, 2015In Sprng, just as they begin to peak their heads out. It is perfectly okay to split them anytime, but easier in Spring, the ground is soft and you can see where you are splitting better.Helpful Reply
