This past summer we created a square window wreath with driftwood and lavender. We loved the look of the square wreath that we decided to scavenge the great outdoors for materials to recreate it as a fresh winter wreath.
To create this wreath you will need:
4 long pieces of wood (we used driftwood) for the wreath frame - the frame will not be visible under the evergreen
1 piece of birch: for center cross bar
1 piece of flat tree bark
1 cardinal - we made ours using a oddly shaped piece of driftwood as described in a separate post
Various types of evergreen, pine branches, etc
Floral wire or nail gun
Fishing line
Garden scissors
" drill bit and drill
Chalkboard paint and paintbrush

The first step was to assemble the four driftwood pieces into a square shape and nail gun them in place. We then added the birch branch cross-bar roughly 1/3 of the way from the top.
Using the various types of cut evergreens - some blue spruce, pine, and other prickly types - we began to secure them to the wreath frame using fishing line. We started in one corner and worked our way around the square layering with the different types of evergreen.
Separately, we drilled a flat piece of tree bark in two spots close to the top edge. We painted the flat side using black chalk paint aiming for a casual, brush stroke look. The chalkboard paint will allow us to change the message on the wreath over time ..."Welcome", "Merry", "Brrr", etc.
Finally, we attached the sign and red cardinal to the wreath to complete the project.

Jane and Sonja on Nov 28, 2015@D fuhrman a square wreath does feel a little bit odd (almost like we're disrespecting the circle!) but we are kind of hooked on making them. Thank you for your comment.

Jane and Sonja on Nov 28, 2015Happy Holidays to you too @Linda ! We're so glad you like the sign in the middle. We could call it a mood sign : changing up the message with our mood ("welcome", "not a good time", "keep out" :) ).
