Older dressers and nightstands

We inherited my parents 2 dressers, and 2 nightstands, plus a headboard, which I have personally never cared for. But they are heavy, solid wood, and I would like to give them new life, besides new hardware. Paint ideas?

lots of blogs and how to's. check Pinterest. I would use a glossy enamel paint (ben Moore Advance is the best for wood furniture) or if you like the chalk paint look, you could go that route. It all depends on your surrounding decor and your skill level on painting.

It is real wood and very high quality. Please do not paint it. Your parents had good taste. Straight lines and so easy to care for. Looks as if it has been well cared for. I believe it is from the early 50s. Do some research and perhaps take a class. You will be glad you did. I bet it is heavy. GOOD LUCK.

Nice solid wood pieces to inherit! So much better than pre-fab MDF stuff. The finish looks intact but pretty washed out, so perhaps a coat of paint is the way to go? Mid-century furniture usually looks better with satin or glossy finishes, more in keeping with the time period.There is a company in our area, Blue Lamb Furnishings that transforms those pieces so beautifully, you would never know they weren't originals. I would do these in cream paint finish with a dark brown glaze on the groves of the drawers. Dry wax shine and a light sand removal on some of the corners for a vintage look. Or I would do a gray blue wash and sand down areas to allow the wood grain to come through. Here are some of my wood finishes to give you some ideas. http://www.fabfauxfinishes.com/wood-finishes.html

I would not paint that furniture. It has beautiful lines and the paint so to speak I feel will take away from it. If anything I would stain with a newer color.Min Wax.com shows all the necessary steps for the process. I would choose a color stain based on the rest of your decor not colors everyone are choosing for you.

for a fun look modge podge different sheets of gift wrap/scrapbook paper in each of the different squares in bright colors but first vintage the whole piece in a neutral color that goes with the room or bedspread.

It looks like very nice furniture. Some say don't paint but I say, if you don't like the look of it and YOU want to use it, then paint it if you want... it will have a new life with you. I would do a navy with very thin gold highlights around the drawers. It would be beautiful

Paint them in your favorite neutral color and add new hardware to spruce them up.

Chalk paint it and wax it. Make your own chalk paint and save a lot of money. Flat paint, 1gallon $10.00 at Walmart, plaster of Paris and a little water to dissolve the POP. No prep for chalk paint other than cleaning the wood.

I found an older 9 drawer dresser and turned it into the base for our bed. Took the feet off so it sits directly on the floor. Mounted plywood on top and added legs to the opposite side. Then a mattress pad on top of the plywood to protect our mattress. I now have more storage! Sanded and repainted to match our bedroom. It had been a horrible orange and green of all things.

I'll try to add some photos next time to show what we did. Can't really explain it much better, other than to say that the plywood was cut to the measurements of our mattress and then we screwed or nailed the plywood into the dresser frame, then addedd 4x4 legs and 2x4 cross pieces to frame out and hold up the other side of the plywood.

So many ideas come to mind. But in the end, more info will help us help you ;-) You don't say what style you're going for, what color scheme you'd like to do, etc. I know painting these types of dressers is quite simple and of course you can change out the knobs or even paint them. ( Personally I love the knobs.) But get ideas/inspirations from rooms you see with similar style dressers, then just go for it :-) There's nothing wrong with finding an inspiration room and copying the look :-)

Chalk paint is great to work with. Just clean the furniture before. I don' know what your color scheme is in the room, but you can never go wrong with white or black. Wax to give a protective coat. Make sure you either change the hardware or spray it with spray paint. Spraying will update the hardware and give you a totally different look and save you some money.

Victoria Howard, Here is a pic of a similar dresser I did. If you look at the before, you will see it's almost the exact same finish. (very popular in the 60's). The type of wood they used is often not suitable to completely strip and sand off the old finish and then redo the wood. The one I had was a mahogany veneer. Unless you are familiar with wood finishing, it's not something that's easy to do. I had a vision of this one in glossy white, so that's what I did. Sometimes I redo the wood top and have a two-tone look, but not for this guy. I kept some of the wood and redid it on the inside part. Used a glossy white and a metallic gold for the accents. This can give u an idea of how yours would look in white. black would look really nice as well. This one sold within a few days of listing.

I would go with the chalk paint and wax in your choice of colors. Then find new knobs, check the internet lots of choices today.
