Colleen on Nov 26, 2015I've used vinegar and steel wool to age galvanized metal. You spray the vinegar on and then rub it down with the wool. May take some elbow grease and many applications with such a large piece. Mine was a small bucket so I was able to let it soak in vinegar between treatments. There are tutorials out there that utilize toilet bowl cleaner as well. I didn't want to mess with that stuff.Helpful Reply

Linda Cabler on Nov 26, 2015If that doesn't work you might try getting some Rust Colored flat spray from Lowe's and spray it lightly. Let it get almost dry and wipe a little of it off.Helpful Reply

John Biermacher on Nov 27, 2015Depends if is it galvanized or steel. A photo would help. If it is galvanized Colleen's process will work but spraying using muriatic acid is very fast but you MUST wear protective gear and do it outside. After the vinegar/acid treatment you can use metal darkening solution that can be purchased at a gun shop. If it is steel- heat it very hot with a torch or in a campfire and then pour drain oil over it to add color and then wash with mineral spirits. This must all be done outside. It won't rust significantly if used inside but must be clear coated if used outside, or it will rust.Helpful Reply

Jim on Nov 28, 2015light sanding or a wire brush attachment on a drill may help. if you have a second smaller piece, try a little salt water solution.Helpful Reply

Alice on Nov 28, 2015My husband used 7% white vinegar sprayed on the tin before he painted our barn roof. The vinegar takes the "finish" off and it will definitely rust this way.Helpful Reply
