Would like comments on the transition look of a tile floor to a hardwood floor?

KMS Woodworks on Mar 12, 2013The easiest transition is to use 1/4" backer under the tile for most 3/8" thick tile. This with the thinset / mastic puts the finished floor height at 3/4" to match standard solid hardwood flooring thickness. This is what I did when I re-worked my living room. The Granite tile in front of my wood stove. was set to the same height as the Bolivian Rosewood flooring. The other pic here is an entry I did for a client, here the existing bamboo was removed and tile installed. This was an a concrete slab so the tile was set with a thicker mud bed to match the bamboo height. If your kitchen tile was set on thick backer (1/2" ) you may need to install some 1/8" underlayment to match the height. The other common method is to use a "tee" shaped piece of molding that will transistion the two, this can be milled to marry two different heights. The "tee" shape requires a wider gap between the wood to tile. If your heights are perfect like in my install a simple caulk joint is all that is needed.Helpful Reply
