@Geraldine Chislett I did one for our bathroom a few years ago. I used a ceramic tile for the top and painted it black. Also purchased new hardware for it. Not a difficult task. If you posted a pic of the dresser you plan to redo, you might obtain some interesting and creative responses.

    From dresser to bathroom vanity?

One thing which we found helpful, both in the construction and conserving storage was to use a vessel sink (no bowl below the surface). We modified one drawer, taking a piece out of the back right corner to allow the pipe to pass through the top. I love, love, love our vanity. I loved the look of the all wood so I simply gave the surface a good coat of wax. I have a little towel on the counter that wipes up any spills or splashes as they happen. It's been over a year and the wood top is still in excellent shape. If this is for a bathroom used by children, putting a marble or glass top on it would probably make more sense.

You could cut thru the top for dink placement and faucet, sacrificing the top drawer area; kept the face of the drawer for coverage in front. The bottom drawers become storage.

There are many tutorials available for the conversion. I'd like to suggest visiting This Old House's website and ask Tom Silva. He did one on a show recently. Loved it.
