I have a set of gas logs and like using them.

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Dec 21, 2011The burner has nothing to do with the logs staying lit. Even though the pilot light stays lit, does not mean that the thermocouple is doing its job properly. I would change this out. Its about a $20 item and is fairly easy to change. If that does not solve the issue, then the gas valve is at fault.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Dec 21, 2011One more thing. Your log system I assume has no power going to it. This means that the gas valve works on what is called a millivolt system. This is powered by the thermocouple. It sends a tiny voltage that is amplified at the gas valve that will keep the gas valve open when you turn it on. Because of this tiny voltage all connections must be very clean and snug. If this is not done, the thermocouple will not be able to provide the correct amount of voltage to the valve thus preventing from allowing gas to flow. Let us know how you make out.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Dec 21, 2011I just rebuilt one for one of my clients last week. The Pilot was on but the main burner would not fire up. I tracked it down to a broken wire coming from the thermocouple. The bummer was all of the work I had to do to "get" to the thermocouple and get it out to test it. ( I used my volt meter to test its resistance over a thermal cycle) I placed the thermocouple tip over the gas burner on the range.Helpful Reply
