Revarnish a chair
-
Jeanette S on Dec 02, 2015The first thing I would do is take a damp cloth and wipe it down good. Then I would try to locate some rub on varnish that does not require sanding. I used to use Barrett's but it was bought out! You can find this in a walnut which should be the right color for your chair. Walnut is brown where mahogany is red and antique walnut is almost black! Post results!Helpful Reply

Shamrockcamper on Dec 02, 2015I found an old game table at a resale store and used Amish Wood Milk, I was amazed at how much goop it removed, and I had already cleaned it up! It shines like a beauty now!Helpful Reply

Karen Usoff on Dec 02, 2015Restore a Finish -- awesome. Just find the color closely matching and put on. It will make it look new and it's easy. Did that with a very old and badly marred antique dresser and it looked like new when I was done.Helpful Reply

Priscanello on Dec 02, 2015the way I have always dealt with this, I was taught by an upholster is to use the dark scratch cover by Old English, put some in a bowl and dip a 000 steel wool into it and start rubbing all over your wood, it is almost like sanding it but it is so fine, it work great, I have always used it on my antiques, and I have a lot of them, hope it does the job, be careful not to get it on your new covers, it would be best to take them off, once you put it on, let it soak in a few min. and than wipe off very good. Pamrwilson on Dec 02, 2015And your chairs would look much better if the cushion came out to the outer edge. You can do this with plywood cut the size of the seat (with rounded corners), secure foam to wood, cover with material of choice, and then attach to chair seat from underside with screws. Do not go through the wood into the foam with the screws. Much better look.Helpful Reply

Marion Nesbitt on Dec 06, 2015You can use marker to touch up some areas if needed or stain. If it just looks like it needs nourishing, try the vinegar and veg oil combo recipe that has appeared on this site. It worked for me. I would remove the cushions so you can do a really good job on all the wood. These are lovely chairs. I think a professional upholstery job would be money well spent.Helpful Reply
