How do I rescue my solid fuel AGA cooker?

Years of neglect have left a solid layer of burnt on grease and coal dust. Oven cleaner and a scraper have damaged the enamel.

Have you written to AGA? They might have some suggestions. Might be worth have it professionally restored. There is a section on the AGA site about restoring the cookers.

In SA the people who recondition AGa stoves paint the two side panes with black heat/ fire resistant paint. I personally have it as I feel the marks etc even on the enamel is part of the authenticity of the AGA. I just make sure it's well cleaned and some marks are on there but it's not dirt as such. I use dishwasher liquid or vinegar to clean as the stronger cleaners can damage. We need to think what cleaners they used in those days. I LOVE my old AGA !!!

Thanks Dianne, I will try your suggestions. Perhaps vinegar soaked cloths laid on the top for a couple of days will help soften the gunge.

Clean with vinegar and baking soda. I have a gas cooker and it works . Then you might have to repainted with a heat and fire resistant paint like rustolium or tremclade . If you can afford it I suggest having it powder coated it's how they do appliances.

Mean Green degreaser and sos pads and some hot water, maybe.

Thanks Susan, I don't know if I can get mean green in the UK, but perhaps I can find something similar if vinegar etc. doesn't work.

I have a 50 year old cookie sheet that was coated with years of baking. (I can't get rid of it because the metal is so great, not like todays) I put it in vinegar (heat the vinegar) and baking soda in the sink overnight and it came 95% clean with a little arm work.

Thankyou Carroll, I have tried vinegar soaked towels on the cold aga, with a little success, but I will light the stove and try again with vinegar and baking soda while it's hot.
