Most children grow up with the anticipation that Santa Claus will visit sometime overnight and leave presents under the tree. They try to stay up late or sneak out of their bedrooms in the middle of the night just to catch a glimpse of him. That was never a worry of mine, though, because Santa would always pay a special visit to my house before I went to bed and give me some early presents straight from his bag.

Of course, as I got older, I realized that the real Santa was actually my parents. And the man who showed up every year at my door before bedtime? That was my uncle who was driven around in a car by my aunt, rather than a sleigh pulled by reindeer. But the joy that I felt to have Santa visit my home was real.
This Christmas, I decided that I wanted to honor some of the cherished memories and history of my past. I found my favorite photograph taken by my dad of me with Santa and enlarged it in black and white to hang over my mantel this holiday season.
Now every time I look at it, I can be reminded of those childhood years when Christmas was truly magical and special. I can think back to the excitement that I must have felt each Christmas eve waiting for Santa to visit. And I can be thankful that I had an uncle who was willing to go out of his way to make all that happen for children each year.
Since I want this photograph to be the focus of my fireplace, I choose to decorate simply around it.
A large red mercury glass ornament and metal orb.....
Some greenery, berries, and logs....
and a tall metal lantern filled with white candles. Just enough for the space to not look bare and allow my cherished image to remain the highlight.
Now this Christmas, I can relax by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate and fondly remember those happy childhood Christmas's spent with my family. And maybe if I'm lucky I'll even be able to once again capture some of that magic of the season. What keepsakes do you have that take you back in time during the holidays?
