Custom Built Farmhouse Style Cabinet Using Salvaged Materials
Last spring, Charles and I visited a local antique store when we came across a cabinet that was made from salvaged closet door and reclaimed wood. We both loved the piece and decided that a larger cabinet would work well in our dining room. We walked away with an idea.
A few weeks later we found some closet doors at an antique store in Virginia. We purchased the closet doors for $5. Later, we found this weathered white 5 inch siding from a 1820 Plantation House built in Clinton, NC at a local salvage store in Durham.
The construction of the cabinet was fairly simple. Charles built a basic frame using the closet door as the sides. Once the frame was built he attached the weathered siding to the back. The front of the cabinet is trimmed out with 1 x 3 wood. We decided to get creative and cut an arch into a 1x8 for some added detail to the top of the cabinet. Charles also added molding to the top and at the base on each side of the cabinet. He also cut the decorative triangle pieces that are placed on the sides.
I added my white dishes, ironstone, scales, cutting boards and our antique coffee grinder to this cabinet. I loved filling the shelves with the pieces that I have collected over time or that has been given to me as gifts. This project turned out far better than I could have imagined and I will cherish this piece for a very long time. To see more photos visit our blog.
