Help with stair railings

Hello everyone! I was a member here years ago (I have been very ill and not on the computer much) I had to start a new account, it had been so long!
We have contracted a carpenter to do new stair railings and posts. At first I thought I had wanted a wood stained banister and post and white spindles. Now I'm looking more online and in magazines and I see wrought iron spindles.
Our home is a 35 y/o split level. It is not fancy by today's standards and we've been here for almost 33yrs., It's definitely home, our home and we have wonderful memories of raising our 2 children here. We keep it beautiful and up to date in terms of the bones of the house.
Can you all please give me your opinions on the two different styles? I know it comes down to what we like. But, I'd still like to know what people's thoughts and experiences are. Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear that you have been ill. Glad you are back! :) I personally prefer simple square or traditional wood spindles. If I had to use wrought iron, again I would go for a simple spindle, nothing scroll-y, as I believe it dates a room much more than wood does. https://www.pinterest.com/alina6883/stairs/
  • You need to consider which one suits they style of your space better. While the wood is traditional the wrought iron is more contemporary. If your space is decorated more traditional then the wood is probably the best choice.

I think your decision rests on two factors: 1) your personal taste and 2) the style of your home. For a traditional style I'd stick with the wood as you originally suggested. If your furnishings are more contemporary, then the wrought iron. Keep in mind that styles change with fads. I personally favor the wood as you described, feeling the wrought iron leaves a space somewhat cold. Very happy to have you back and hope you are feeling much better now!

THIS IS JMT-not LINELY~Thanks everyone! You reinforced what was in my gut and, dispelled the doubts regarding iron. My DH said it remind him of our childhood when wrought iron was everywhere! Wood is classic. I think I'll stick with it. Wish I knew what to do with the old ones...in terms of upcycling. Even though we are replacing rather than just reprinting and staining. I know there must be something I can do with them! I found a pick similar to what it looks like now and what we are going for with. A railings contractor.

If your home and style is more traditional/transitional in style, I would go with wood. Iron railings strike me as more contemporary when it comes to railings.
  • Personally, I like wood.
