What is the best brand/kind of hydrangeas?
I am located in GA and plan to plant them next to our house in a part sun/part shade area. Morning shade/afternoon sun.
Also tips on getting them to grow well this first year - should I expect blooms this year?

Douglas Hunt on Mar 26, 2013Your conditions are the reverse of what hydrangeas generally want, Christina, which is morning sun and afternoon shade. The paniculata varieties are generally happier with more sun than the macrophyllas, which are the traditional mophead hydrangeas that have pink or blue flowers depending on soil pH. Paniculatas have white blooms that sometimes take on pink or red tones as they age (for example, "Pink Diamond," a favorite of mine). Like most plants in nurseries, hydrangeas sell best when they are in bloom, so you should not have trouble having blooms this year. Here's a very good introduction to hydrangeas from the U.S. National Arboretum: http://www.usna.usda.gov/Gardens/faqs/hydrangeafaq2.htmlHelpful Reply

Jeanette S on Mar 27, 2013I got a laugh out of this post because I too planted my hydrangea in he wrong place and it is stunning...but I admit is is almost always in shade and has been out only 1 year. It was in a large container for 3 years...stunning foliage, but no blooms until it went in the ground. Perhaps it had a great start is why it is so pretty. And it may not survive many years....??? I know nothing about these plants so just put it where I wanted it!Helpful Reply
