Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Apr 01, 2013Many people seal chimneys with no luck. Reason is brick cannot be successfully sealed! It must be properly flashed with a good quality masonry cement cap on the top. All mortar joints must be tight as well. Do not waste your money on any sealer, asphalt coating, or paint. Many try clear sealers that do nothing other then empty your wallet. I suggest that you have a professional chimney sweep look at this issue for you. If the outside is in poor shape, it may be just as bad on the inside. Only a on site personal evaluation can determine the condition and how to correct.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Apr 05, 2013Look for professionals that are members of larger organizations such as the national chimney sweeping guild. http://www.ncsg.org/ Ask for references and lastly do not pay large deposits or final payments until work is complete and if needed inspected by your local building department if required.Helpful Reply

Vernon Hodgson on May 27, 2015Call your Bricklayers local union, and ask them for a trained professional. Most homes and fireplaces are built by non union, and most of them have not been trained in anything, a union bricklayer has to go to 3 yrs nite school, and 3 yr apprenticeship. Any masonry product can be sealed, you just have to know what type of sealer to use. And by the way, chimney sweeps know absolutely nothing about building or repairing fireplaces, chimney sweeps clean the flues, nothing else.Helpful Reply
