Mat for rotary cutter

Self-healing mats are so expensive. Is there a material, maybe from the hardware store, that will serve the purpose? It doesn't have to be self-healing.

  • You could think about using a plastic cutting board and there are some at the dollar store which are just plastic mats. i think that would work because sometimes i use one for cutting in my garage with an exacto knife

I need something much larger though, to cut thru maybe a yard at a time.
    • @Amy Driver Do you have a JoAnn's fabric store near you? If you do, they have an online coupon for 50% off an item and that is how I bought my self healing mat a few years back. You could even check out any craft store because they usually have coupons for 40-50% off an item that is not on sale- Hobby Lobby, A.C. Moore, Michaels. etc

I find that coupons for Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Fabrics, Hancock Fabrics, really bring the price down. Your rotary cutter blades aren't cheap, either; I would suggest using a coupon or waiting till you can afford it. Using other plastic boards would work, but your blades will dull very quickly!!! Good luck with your project!!

Self healing mats last for ever! I have had mine for at least 15 yrs and I am pretty rough on it. Save your self some money, get a coupon and go to the craft store or Wally World has them. That's where I got mine.
